New Era: Fine Fermentations
Grand Opening Party. December 7, 2018
One of Tulsa’s hottest neighborhoods has a new offering in New Era: Fine Fermentations. This brew pub, surrounded by other downtown hot spots such as The Boxyard and The Fur Shop, is located in a historic downtown building called The Dock. What sets this brewery apart from others in town is its commitment to brew all gluten-free beer. This concept was created out of necessity by the brewmaster, Jonathon Neff, who suffers from celiac disease.
Upon entering the establishment, one is immediately struck by the warm, minimalist, decor. On the night we visited, live acoustic music played lightly in the background. Lights and decorations note the Christmas season and create an inviting atmosphere where tables and modern leather stools provide ample seating for groups of varying sizes. Behind the bar you’ll find open shelving and golden taps from which the friendly staff will gladly pour one of their six beer offerings, or better yet, order a flight so you can sample them all.
Seating at any of the tables provides a nice view of the patio area, sure to beckon patrons when the weather warms, as well as the heart of the establishment, the brewery operation itself. Pristine stainless-steel vats hard at work brewing and housing the next batches of beer. For those wanting a more intimate experience, there is ample bar seating. Here, you can interact with the friendly staff and watch as they deftly navigate their surroundings to accommodate the large crowd.
Had I not already known the beer was gluten-free, it would have remained a secret. We sampled five of the six creations and were not disappointed by any of them. Of the six beers on tap, you can expect to find:
Apollo Blonde - an easy-to-sip beer with a crisp, clean finish.
Buckwheat Saison - a Belgian yeast beer characterized by notes of stone fruit and chamomile.
English Brown Ale - brewed with chocolate millet and dark roasted rice
Ignition Switch - a Belgian Pale Ale with a note of clove spice
Hand of Orion - notes of citrus flavors and brewed with an experimental yeast
Coconut Stout - brewed in limited supply featuring notes of chocolate and coffee
