Charlie Hickman Band : What Goes Around

Charlie Hickman Band : What Goes Around

When you think of Red Dirt music, usually your thoughts drift towards some of the classics: Tom Skinner, Bob Childers, The Red Dirt Rangers, Jason Boland and The Stragglers, and the recently reprised Turnpike Troubadours. Usually, the sound that comes to mind with that is more of a laid-back country/folk with some rock mixed in for emphasis. But as we all well know, bands like The Great Divide and Cross Canadian Ragweed shattered that mold. Now, in that same vein, another rock unit has been coming up through the Red Dirt ranks, The Charlie Hickman Band.

The Charlie Hickman Band was formed in the small oil field town of Cushing, Oklahoma, in April of 2016. Since then, the band has been steadily gigging and building a loyal fan base throughout Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas with a strong rock sound, great melodies, and fantastic live performances. The hard-hitting rock and roll sound that the band boldly boasts reflects the band's collective influences spanning through the decades. Influences such as Hank Williams, Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, Muddy Waters, and Incubus have helped shape the overall sound of the band.

With two solid EPs already out, 2018’s “Coming Home” and 2020’s “Trouble,” the boys are after it again and are in the process of releasing four new singles; the first of which is an angry breakup song titled “What Goes Around.”

“What Goes Around,” unlike some songs in this genre that have either great music or great lyrics, has both. The song has a great melodic feel that is paired well with some hard-hitting, aggressive, crunchy, guitar thanks to Tyler Nichols on lead, and a driving rhythm courtesy of Will Davis on drums and Terry Bradley on bass.

The lyrics are nothing to be scoffed at either. From the sounds of them, they were born from experience, anger, and pain. Charlie and the boys are telling a story of betrayal and hurt. And the chorus says what, I believe, many of us would have wanted to say to that person(s) who had done us wrong.

“I hope you're crying / Screaming at the wall and cussing my name / And I would be lying if I said I wasn’t smiling at your pain / What goes around always comes back around”

I’d be lying if I said that this song didn’t put a smile on my face. It's well worth the listen. If this song is any example of the rest of the four singles, then maybe they are all worth picking up. “What Goes Around” is set for release on April 1 and no, that ain’t no joke.
