6th Annual Rock 'N Folk 'N Chili Cook-Off: Horton Records

6th Annual Rock 'N Folk 'N Chili Cook-Off: Horton Records

Tulsa came out and Tulsa showed out, for the 6th Annual Horton Records Rock ‘N Folk ‘N Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser.

This magical night took place on Saturday November 9, 2019 at the infamous majesty herself, The Cain’s Ballroom. While I knew what to expect musically, I had NO idea what to expect when it came to chili.

The chili is a whole element to a music night that I had no clue was needed. There was chili from many local downtown restaurants and even some from the musicians. You could sample every one of them, which I may have…

This was an all-ages show, and those always bring a smile to this momma’s heart. Nothing quite like watching a toddler glide across the beat to music that she hasn’t grasped, yet. But neither have we, for us Oklahoma folks, we are privy and so close, in my humble and loud opinion to some of the best musicians there will ever be.

For a whopping total of $15 and a canned item or two you got to experience this fantastic event, and while again the chili was amazing for a person who likes to eat (me), this night was about Horton Records and the local music family. And when you talk Horton, is when you talk music.

You have probably seen Brian Horton at maybe every show you have ever been to, and when I tell you this fact, know it is indeed a fact. Horton LOVES music and he likes to bring music to people, but truly, Horton wants to see musicians make it.

Being a musician is not an easy road and truthfully, it’s a road you can not do right without a team of support, which, my friends, is what Horton Records gives all of these musicians. They are, and we are just lucky they like to jam out with their family.

Horton Records, LTD is a non-profit 501c-3 organization based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Their mission “is to provide support and tools for band management, promotion, booking, merchandizing, and distribution in order to help local and regional musicians fulfill their artistic’s goals and further promote local and regional music on a broader scale.” Also, Horton is a completely volunteered organization, no paid positions.

I mean, WOW.

So, we know who Horton is, we ate the chili, now let’s talk about the music.

The music was stacked to the brim with Tulsa based musicians, including some of my very favorites, and a couple new ones, that I have added to my favorite category. I know, I know Kira, hurry up.

Beau Robertson was there with Pilgrim, Freak Juice put on a stunning performance, the handsome Erik Oftedal opened the show with Ken Pomeroy, Dan Martin, Gene Williams, and Ryan “Danger” McCall, which set the tone for the night. Golden Ones brought out my love for girl punk rock and last, but we all know nowhere near least, The Tulsa Tribute.

The Tulsa Tribute was stacked, featuring Paul Benjaman, Chris Combs, Jesse Aycock, John Fullbright, Paddy Ryan, Jacob Tovar and many specials guests.

They brought the house down; I am really not sure how The Cain’s Ballroom is still standing.

The night was a complete success in so many aspects, but first and foremost, this was a fundraiser to support Horton Records as they continue their mission. The night raised $28,706! A new record for the event, as well as 120 coats for the Youth Services of Tulsa and 380 food items or 258 lbs of food for the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.

Thank you to music fans, chili fans and THANK YOU to Horton Records. It was a wonderful evening, and I thank you for letting me tell you about it.
